The “Five Roses EP”, a scintillating two-track release that epitomises Moox’s signature underground, deep house style.
Think early, oldskool house music. A rawness that hits some switch in your body that makes you want to move. Sounding precisely as if unearthed from a vault of dusty 90’s house records, “Five Roses EP” is a release that will make the old house heads reminisce and for new fans - ignite a new love for the original sound of deep house.
Opening with the titular track, “Five Roses”, this piece exudes a vibrant, breezy house vibe. Upbeat yet deep at the same time, on the main keyboard hook alone expect echo, reverb, resonance and then throw in some sub bass, a phat kick-drum and some spattered hi-hats. Now we have a track perfect for poolside lounging or daytime dance sessions.
Contrasting this with the b-side “Throw Down” Moox delves into a deeper, club-ready groove while maintaining that distinct lo-fi essence synonymous with his productions.
“Throw Down” is a track that could be filed under ghetto house, deep house and lo-fi. A heavyweight kick and accented tom drum lay the groundwork for the bongos and a wood block snare. The off-kilter key sequence conjures a sense of some really mean house music, an oldskool rawness so seldom heard nowadays.
Moox, the Montreal-born music producer and DJ, over the last 6 years has amassed a following of dedicated deep house / lo-fi aficionados. Utilising spaces like Soundcloud, Instagram and bandcamp. Moox follows the path of many other talents unearthed organically from these shared platforms accessible to all.
Moox was introduced to electronic music through mainstream EDM music on the radio. After broadening his horizons and discovering other forms in electronic music such as House and its varying sub-genres, he was hooked.
He fell in love with deep and lo-fi House. The simplicity, rawness and emotion in this music clicked and it started shaping his own music productions.
His studio setup is very simple; Macbook, Yamaha HS7 speakers and an Akai MPK Mini keyboard. He also dabbles with the Native Instruments Maschine 2 which he’ll use on occasion for inspiration and mess around with something that feels a little more hands on instead of a laptop. His approach to producing normally starts with creating a drum loop and then messing around with some synths and once the hook is discovered - he ventures down the rabbit hole…
Moox has been fortunate to play several small events across Montreal. Some of his most memorable ones were for Groove Garden which took place during 2022.
At the weekends you might find him clubs in Montreal such as: Le Salon Daome, Stereo and Piknic Electronik on Sundays during the summer.
Nowadays, Moox leans musically towards the likes of; Bicep, Four Tet, Logic1000, Dusky, Overmono, Jacques Greene, and Kerri Chandler. While collectively there can be some similarities drawn, these artists all have their own special style. Similarly, Moox looks to implement his own style of heartfelt, emotion inducing dance music.
Success, for this artist, isn't about big shows or being super famous. It's about connecting with at least one person through their music. Making music every day and sharing it, along with forming friendships with other musicians, that's what matters most. Moox started by self-releasing his own music and still does, but he’s also excited about working with labels, like his upcoming release with Dealt With Records. The relationship with the label was forged over Soundcloud and a mutual appreciation for deep house.
As Moox sets his sights on his musical expression and connecting with the dancefloor, the “Five Roses EP” signals an exciting new phase in his evolving musical story, centred on personal connections through his music.
